Flyer for Sound Historian Special Section on COVID-19

Sound Historian accepts articles on multidisciplinary topics that apply oral history in any appropriate subject, such as academic research, methodology, or pedagogy. Article submissions are welcomed from students, academics, and practitioners.

There are two categories of article submissions:

Long-Form Articles: These articles should be around 15-20 pages in length (approximately 5000 words) and focus on scholarly research. Proper citation and style is key, as these submissions will be blind peer-reviewed. This category is primarily designed for academics and Ph.D. candidates who wish to introduce or expand on a particular field of oral history research.

Short-Form Articles: These articles should be around 8-10 pages in length (approximately 2500 words) and can focus on any topic or experience pertaining to the oral history profession. Citations are still required when referencing other work, but certain articles may be valid sans-citation. This category is ideal for college students looking for their first publication, or non-academics who wish to share their work with a larger audience. These articles will not be peer-reviewed but evaluated by the editorial team.

Manuscripts should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document in 12-point font, double-spaced throughout, and follow The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition. Citations should be entered as footnotes. A works cited listing provided at the end of an article is appreciated but not required, and should not be taken into consideration regarding article length/word count.

If you would like to submit a manuscript for the 2022 edition, the deadline is January 1, 2023. Your manuscript will then either be reviewed by the editor (short-form articles) or be designated by the editor for review in a single-blind peer review process (long-form articles) to determine if it is eligible for publication or if it needs additional work. All authors should receive a notification of acceptance or declination by March 1, 2023. Once the article is accepted for publication, the editors will provide instructions in the following months regarding revisions and final edits.

Articles accepted in 2022 will be published in the Volume 23 edition by the end Q1 2023.

Send e-mail submissions or inquiries to:
